Dr. Simon Liu is the Director of Information Systems at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Institutes of Health. He plans, develops, operates, and maintains IT systems and infrastructure to support NLM mission. Prior to joining NLM, Dr. Liu was the Acting Director of Information Management and Security at the U.S. Department of Justice where he oversaw and monitored Justice-wide IT programs and budget. He has been the Chief System Architect at the Treasury Department , where developed Treasury IT architecture and policies. He has been a project manager in the private industry where he developed information systems for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. In the past 15 years, Dr. Liu has served as an adjunct faculty member of several universities including: Whiting School of Engineering and Carey Business School at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland; Robert H. Smith School of Business at University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland; Computer Science Department at George Washington University, Washington, D.C.,; and Graduate School of Technology Management at University of Maryland University College, College Park, Maryland. He is the associate editor-in-chief of the IT Professional magazine, a publication of IEEE Computer Society. Dr. Liu holds two doctorate degrees in Computer Science and Higher Education Administration from George Washington University, a Master ‘s of Arts degree in Government from Johns Hopkins University, a Master‘s of Business Administration degree from the University of Maryland, a Master‘s of Science in Computer Science from Indiana University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Chun-Yuan University.
Dr. Liu will discuss DEFENDING CYBER SPACE - A PRACTITIONER’S ENDURING JOURNEY. Cyber security threats are increasing and changing rapidly. Enterprises’ dependence on cyber space is greater than ever. Enterprises need to minimize the risk to their business operations by defending their cyber space through a practical, robust, and enduring enterprise-wide cyber security program. This presentation addresses this need by answering the following questions: Why a cyber security program? Who are the attackers and how do they attack?
