Cyber War. It’s here. Who is Winning?
In 2008, spies broke into the Pentagon. No violence was involved. No guard was overpowered, no knockout gas was used. Instead, a simple flash drive was left in an employee parking lot waiting for some unsuspecting government employee to find it and, with a little luck, plug it into their computer on the Pentagon's network. On the flash drive was sophisticated spyware that gave the attacker access to Central Command's classified network. And just like that, the world's most powerful country was losing a war it wasn't even aware it was fighting.
Or was it? Back in 1982, during the height of the Cold War, Soviet spies had stolen parts from a Canadian company that designed and manufactured computer systems for controlling valves and pumps in gas pipelines. What the Soviets didn’t know was that the CIA had modified the software so that the valves would, after a period of tranquility, spontaneously increase the pressure beyond the bursting point of the pipeline. The resulting explosion was so huge that it was detected by American early launch satellites.
As cyber security professionals and members of law enforcement, we must deal with unauthorized and unlawful access to sensitive systems like the power grid, international banking system and, indeed, the United States Pentagon. Given enough resources and will, however, any system can be penetrated. Join us at ICCS 2010 to discuss the latest in network and data security plus many of today's Emerging Technologies, Operations and Enforcement, and Real Life Experiences related to cyber security.
